The Night The Lights Went Out At Edisto!

It was a dark and stormy night. The thunder roared, the lightening flashed and slashed across the sky. Dark clouds billowed on the horizon, low and menacing. The waves crashed upon the shore with a viciousness we had not seen before. As we hunkered down for fear of looming tornados in the distance, the power went out and the once happy view of the ocean was made scary and sinister by the flicker of candles and the howls of the storm.

But you see my dear blogger friends, as a former journalism major; I recognize that this is NOT the lead for this story. No, the lead for this tragic tale is simply this. THE POWER WENT OUT – RIGHT AS DAVID COOK WAS STARTING TO SING HIS LAST SONG, IN THE FINAL, THE VERY LAST ONE, ON AMERICAN IDOL LAST NIGHT.

I am not kidding. It was like something out of a movie. Oh the TV signal lasted through all the silly commercials, the crazy “boxing” metaphor vignettes, and then, just as he was being introduced with his last song EVER, the signal went dead, the power went off and that was that. It was as if David Chase had once again crawled into my television set and wrote the final episode of American Idol just as he did the ending to the Sopranos. I am sure you could have heard my screams from wherever you are today reading this tragedy.

I could only sit in a my favorite rocker and dream of what David Cook might be singing, what the judges would say, how Ryan would shake his hand in that brotherly way at the end. The cheers of the audience, the stand ovation he would no doubt get, the look on his family’s faces as they watched proudly from the arena. Oh, the horror!

Tonight, as the final curtain is indeed drawn on this season of Idol, I can only hope that the power generators here on this beautiful slice of paradise remain in gear, at least long enough for me to see the end. I am sure that David A will win. Just something about him being seventeen and a pretty decent singer, and okay, kind of cute in a teenage way combined with all the crazy teenage girls with phones in America, I just think he will win. But for David Cook, the future is so bright; he needs to invest in some shades! Following in the steps of Clay, and Bo, and even Daughtery, sometimes it is best to not win that particular competition. Just ask Rueben or Blake(who???)

So, yes, a storm hit Edisto last night. But the real tragedy was happening here at the old Sea Plus – in my heart!
