I have been listening to a lot of music lately.
And by that I mean actual music, not the Wiggles or Wee Sing for Kids!
I am not hip enough to have an ipod or an mp3 player, (although, if someone wants to start making out Christmas lists now… I would love either!) therefore I have to rely on the old fashioned way of selecting cds and playing them one after another. It is tedious and sometimes I just miss the good old mix tapes that we made off of songs from the radio.
Come on – you know you did it.
Keeping that tape recorder set to go as soon as your favorite song came on – then holding it up to the radio speaker and PRAYING that your mom didn’t walk in the door and say something to ruin the recording. I did it – hundreds of times. And truthfully, the best gift anyone could ever give me was a mix tape they had made for me. I even have some of them – still to this day!
Anyhoo… I chased that rabbit until it went right in its hole... sorry.
What I was trying to say was simply this – I have been enjoying some really great music lately and have decided to share it with you blog readers as a new feature on this the second year of Happy in the Moment.
At the end of each blog post, I will give a song of the day. Most probably this song will be somehow connected to the day’s post – either by way of helping to inspire the post, or maybe the post reminds me of the song, or it could be just what I am listening to that day. I think it will be fun. I hope you will enjoy it and maybe you will find some new music to inspire you as well.
This week I have had Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow and Dixie Chicks in the lineup. I have been in a stressful mood and nothing de-stresses me more than the mellow Jack Johnson. Sheryl Crow sings a particular song that reminds me of someone dear – so every now and then I like to hear it and sing it really loud in the car – Hannah is usually begging me to stop about three beats into the song – she clearly has no appreciation for my musical talents. But if you ever hear Favorite Mistake, by Sheryl on the radio, just know that somewhere I am belting it out – LOUD AND PROUD.
I haven’t listened to the Dixie Chicks in a long time. I have a wild story about their song Landslide, it is for another time, but ever since their crash in 2003 for being too political, I have really not listened to them. But this week, I watched a documentary that inspired me to get their cds back out and listen. And you know what, turns out – I still like to hear them sing. I don’t want them to tell me how to vote, but their songs have been a balm to my frazzled soul this week. I have loved singing Ready To Run – just to annoy my daughter and Cowboy Take Me Away has been a great fun sing along as well. Tonight while doing dishes I listened to their Taking The Long Way Around album – one particular song struck me – it was called Favorite Year. It sums up what I my heart thinks like no other song I have heard. Another one on that album,Silent House, can provoke real tears even while scrubbing pots and pans – I can testify to that.
I have been away from my music for a long time. I seldom listen to the cds I have purchased – mainly relying on the radio to satisfy my musical hunger – but I am so happy to be reconnected to the music that I love, that inspires me and calms my weary soul.

Song of the day: Favorite Year, Dixie Chicks

Don't know Jack Johnson, but keep hearing about him. Will have to check him out after China. Don't love the Dixie Chicks, but mostly because I don't particularly love many female vocalists. I'm more drawn to female singers when they sound like Sheryl Crow or Faith Hill or Jennifer Nettles. I like the deeper huskier tones of their voices.
"On my iPod" right now? The Boss whistling and snapping to some classical tune while he flips pancakes. Usually for pancakes it's arias and operas that he fakes for the kids :)
